Dental plaque is an oral biofilm that develops naturally on tooth surfaces. It is formed by colonizing bacteria which attach to surfaces of teeth. The film is soft enough to come off by brushing. It starts to harden within 48 hours; and in about 10 days the plaque becomes tartar, rock-hard and difficult to remove unless scraped off professionally or dissolved with Periogen.
